Herbert Henry Staggs, a long term resident of Auburn California, passed away with dignity, on Sunday August 26, 2018, in Modesto, California, after a valiant battle with a prolonged illness. Herb was born in Rector, Arkansas on December 16, 1929. At the age of 19 he joined the US Army and did two tours of duty. Herbert’s passion for sports was apparent to all who knew him. His many accomplishments included founding the local Modesto Athletic Boxing Club, taking it to the international level and winning the Jay Paytee Award for 1973. Herb was also the Golden Gloves boxing coach for the San Francisco and Las Vegas teams and the international coach for the U.S. team. Herbert’s many and varied interests also included baseball, golf, boating, water skiing, training and showing gaited horses and most importantly spending time with his beloved family. Herb made a “lasting” impression on everyone he ever encountered. “He never met a stranger”. Herb was preceded in death by his loving wife, Connie, his youngest son Curtis and granddaughter Stefanie. He is survived by his brother James, daughter Vada (David Moon) son John (Maria) and his daughter Donna, fifteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren with his youngest great grandson due in October. “Always his faithful servant… he is in the hands of our Lord”.
