Obituary of Harold Hale Jr. Harold Duncan “Bud” Hale Jr., age 93, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at St. Clare-Newport. He previously lived on Osprey Court in Middletown, RI. He was the husband of Kathleen V. Sullivan to whom he had been married to for 70 years. Bud was born in Newport RI. He was the son of the late Harold D. Hale and Anne F. Hughes Hale. Bud attended Newport schools. He was a member of the Greatest Generation. Upon graduating from Rogers High School Bud was drafted into the Ninth Infantry and served in World War II. Bud was a forward observer and a radioman. He served with “Wild Bill”, his lieutenant, and Bud like to say they walked across Europe. Bud was known as “Cookie” to his fellow soldiers because of all the treats sent to him from his sisters and mother. Bud received several medals including the Purple Heart. Bud attended Syracuse University after the war and graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering. After several different jobs, he went to work At NUSC for many years. He was in charge of the Standards and Calibration Labs in Newport and New London, CT. Bud is survived by Kathleen, and two children: Mary E. “Betsy” Colaneri, and Michael P. “Brit” Hale. His son Harold D. “Timmy” Hale III predeceased him. He also leaves his beloved grandson Timothy T. Colaneri. He is also survived by his sisters Jane Hale and Suzanne Nunes and brother Frank Hale. He was the brother of the late Barbara Ford, Mary E. Silvia, and Robert Hale. Bud also leaves many nieces and nephews. Bud enjoyed working with his hands. He could fix anything and liked keeping busy whether gardening, repairing something, refinishing furniture, or painting. He enjoyed working in the fields at Newport Vineyards with his relatives after he retired. His funeral will be on Monday, September 24th at 9:00 am in St. Lucy’s Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown, RI. Burial will follow at St. Columba Cemetery, 465 Brown’s Lane, Middletown RI.
