Obituary for Elizabeth Susan Bartlett Elizabeth (Susan) Bartlett Susan Bartlett of Bloomington passed away September 22, 2018 at the age of 91. Ms. Bartlett was born on September 11, 1927 in Bloomington, IN, the daughter of Cecil V. and Nell J. (Helfrich) Bartlett. She graduated from Bloomington High School and worked at radio stations WTOM and WTTS while attending Indiana University. From 1949 to 1959, she worked at television station WTTV in Bloomington/Indianapolis where she headed the traffic, continuity, photo and art departments. She later served as Program Director of that station until her departure. During this time, Susan founded the Hoosier Chapter of American Women in Radio & Television, serving as its president for four years. She spent eight years working for Indianapolis advertising agencies as both Radio/Television Director and Creative Director. She was named Indianapolis “Ad Woman of the Year” in 1968. She worked in Detroit as Production Manager for National Television News where, in addition to producing news film for national clients, she wrote, produced, and directed a documentary for the U.S. Department of the Interior, winning 1st prize at the New York International Film Festival. During this time, she also served as president of the Michigan Chapter of AWRT. Susan free-lanced in the New York area, producing films for several government agencies in Washington, D.C. before moving to that area where she served as Audiovisual Officer for the U.S. National Science Foundation. While there, she produced radio and television programs that were aired on commercial and public broadcasting stations as well as producing videos for school use. NSF received awards during her tenure from both foreign film festivals and every major film and video festival in the U.S. Working as NSF producer/director, Ms. Bartlett traveled with film crews to many locations, including Antarctica. Ms. Bartlett was named Outstanding Woman for Contribution to the Arts by the Federally Employed Women; she was president of the Washington, DC Film and Video Council; and she served on the board of the Council for International Non-Theatrical Events (CINE) in Washington, DC for ten years. In 2007, she was inducted into the Indiana Broadcasters Hall of Fame. Her major interests included jazz, films, and animal rights. For many years, Who’s Who in America has recognized her by listing her accomplishments in their publication. Susan freely admitted, however, she still had no idea what’s what. Ms. Bartlett’s sister, Louise Wynn and her two brothers, John Bartlett and Robert Bartlett preceded her in death. Her marriage to Gene Sherman ended in divorce. Survivors include nieces Sally Gerber and Susan Kensill (Mike) of Greenwood, IN, and Judy Taylor of Buena Park, CA; nephews Mike Bartlett of Lakewood, CA, and David Wynn of Elliston, VA; and cousin Barbara Randall of Bloomington, IN.
