Doug James went to be with his Lord at age 67, on September 7, 2018 in Sugarland, Texas. He was born on October 10, 1950 in Bay City, Texas to William Franklin James and Bernice Elizabeth James, and then early in life, moved to Pledger, Texas where he grew up on a small working farm. On August 10, 1974 he married the love of his life, Cheri Ann Byrd. They made their home in and around Damon, Texas. They were blessed with two beautiful daughters, Elizabeth Ann and Michelle Renee. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, father Frank James, mother, Bernice James, father-in-law Sonny Byrd, and sister-in-law Pam James. He is survived by his wife Cheri (Damon), daughters Elizabeth Hanzik and Jody, granddaughters Jodi and Jordan Hanzik (West Columbia), daughter Michelle Kresse and Matt (Damon), brother-in-law’s Gary and Susan Byrd (Sweeny), Mack and Christi Byrd (Lake Jackson), brother Thomas James (Groesbeck, Texas), mother-in-law Bessie Mooring and Benny (Damon), Aunt Genevive Shedyak (Hope, Texas),several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Working for Xerox, Doug had the opportunity to meet many different people and made many lasting friendships. He serviced machines in Fort Bend, Matagorda, Wharton, Brazoria, and Colorado Counties. Doug was actively involved in his daughter’s education, serving as the president of the PTA. He was also President of the Damon Lions Club for many years. Doug loved playing baseball and football while attending Boling ISD. In later years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family. He was also involved with the little league, serving as an umpire for many years. In later years, he enjoyed watching his granddaughters play softball and volleyball. He was actively involved with his church, being ordained as a deacon in the early 80’s. In November, 2016 Doug was issued a Certificate Of License to preach the gospel. Doug and Cheri attended Capital Baptist Church in West Columbia, Texas. He was also the adult Sunday School Teacher for the last several years. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and fellow church family. Visitation will be held Monday September 10, 2018 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Baker Funeral Home in West Columbia, Texas. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday September 11th at 2:00 PM also at Baker Funeral Home with Brother Kenneth James officiating. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jody Hanzik, Matt Kresse, Jamie Hanzik, Danny Beard, Gerald Walker and Gary Byrd.
