Obituary for Leon Richard Woodworth GENEVA – Leon Richard Woodworth, 84, of 848 Rt. 5 & 20, went home with our Lord on Monday, August 20, 2018, at Clifton Springs Hospital after a battle with cancer. Friends may call at the DeVaney-Bennett Funeral Home, 181 N. Main St., Geneva on Saturday, August 25, 2018 from 11:00 AM until 1:00 PM. A memorial service will be held immediately following at the funeral home. The Rev. Ellen Wooley will officiate. Burial will be at a later date at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1120 S. Goodman St., Rochester, NY 14620. Leon was born in Waterloo, NY on March 10, 1934, son of the late Kenneth P. (KP) and Arlene Kettle Woodworth. He graduated from Geneva High School in 1952. He had been a member of the high school rifle club where he earned the National Rifle Association’s Sharpshooters award as well as others. In the mid 1950’s, love of fast cars took him to Speed Week held in Daytona Beach, Florida. Competing in the Flying Mile event, he earned NASCAR Century Club’s Flying Mike award having obtained a speed of 113.924 MPH over a five mile course, the fastest 1955 Chevrolet in the NASCAR competition. After returning home from Florida he placed his car on blocks and served two years in the U.S. Army. After returning home from service he worked with his father developing the first Florida type quality Mobile Home Park in the Finger Lakes, “Woodworth Mobile Home Park.” Leon expanded into sales service of high quality mobile homes in keeping with the park’s reputation. In later years, he brought utility trailers into the business following the same high quality standards enjoyed over the history of his business. He was a revered business man for decades. He continued to expand his business interests until his health took over. Also in 1958, after his return from the service, he became heavily involved as a volunteer with the White Springs Fire Dept., ending up following in his father’s footsteps who was chief at the time. Leon served 5-year terms on the Board of Directors several times. He was an Assistant Chief for several years and Fire Chief from 1978-1986. He leaves behind the love of his live for 58 1/2 years, Carolyn Woodworth, and his precious daughter, Debra, of Canandaigua. Surviving are his brother, Donald and Rosi Woodworth of Melbourne, FL; brother, David and Lisa Woodworth of Geneva; step-brother, Walt and Barbara Wermuth of Inlet, NY; “Honorary” son, John Simons of Canandaigua, NY; nieces, nephews, cousins, close friends, and the Fiori family of Geneva, NY. He is predeceased by his parents, Kenneth and Arlene Woodworth; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Freeman and Marion Bachelder of Vermont; and also a family loved stepmother, Janet.
