Abelardo Losada 2018

OBITUARY Abelardo Losada September 21, 1933 – August 26, 2018 Abelardo Losada, 84, of East Hartford, passed away on August 26, 2018 at home surrounded by his loving family. Born on September 21, 1933, in Garzón, Huila, Colombia, he was the son of the late Leonte Losada and Emilia Cadena. Abelardo lived an extraordinary and inspiring life best characterized by a sense of righteous perseverance in the face of intense adversity. Even as a child, he worked extremely hard to help his parents support his family. When Abelardo was young, he was drafted into the Colombian army. A deeply entrepreneurial and religious man, he married his beloved wife Nelly in 1958, had five children and owned two small businesses in Colombia, before immigrating to the United States due to the ongoing political crisis there. Upon arriving in Connecticut, at the age of 52, Abelardo fought to be successful and take care of his family. He worked long hours in many jobs, never letting the language barrier slow him down. He truly defined the hard working family man. In 1991, he opened Lozada Jewelry, his family-run business, on Park Street in Hartford, which has since become a staple of the Latino community in the city. He spent the last decades of his life working tirelessly and serving his community through the Catholic Church and the Spanish American Merchants Association, which awarded him its Merchant of the Year award in 2005. As hard as he worked, Abelardo also took the time to enjoy life. He was a fan of professional soccer, overwhelmingly generous and faithful to God, but his true joy in life was spending as much time as possible with his family and friends. Nothing made him happier than being in the company of his children and grandchildren who often referred to him as Don Francisco, the host of Univision’s Sábado Gigante, because of his charisma and vigor. He will be missed by all who knew him. In addition to his beloved wife of 60 years, Nelly, Abelardo is survived by his loving children, Liliana, Ana Isabel, Jorge Enrique Carlos Humberto, Maria Del Socorro. He will also be missed by his cherished grandchildren, Sebastian, Melissa, Miguel, Justin, Mauricio, Erica, Victoria, Valentina, and Marcela, and three great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 31st, at St. Rose Church, 33 Church St., East Hartford. Everyone is asked to meet directly at the church. The family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, August 30th from 4-7 p.m. at D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd., Wethersfield.
