Sister Jacinta Slyne CCVI 2018

OBITUARY Sister Jacinta Slyne, CCVI August 12, 1934 – July 28, 2018 Sister Jacinta Slyne, CCVI, a Sister of Charity of the Incarnate Word, Houston, TX, has been called to eternal life on Saturday, July 28, 2018, at St. Placidus Convent, Houston, Texas. May she enjoy the presence of God to Him whom she loved and served faithfully. Sr. Jacinta was born Ellen Philomena in 1934 to James and Annie Scally Slyne in Minane Bridge, Co. Cork, Ireland. Sr. Jacinta entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word on July 3, 1951 at St. Michael Convent, Co. Clare, Ireland. On August 15, 1959, Sr. Jacinta consecrated her life to God by Perpetual Profession of Vows at the Villa de Matel, Houston. Early on, Sr. Jacinta demonstrated a love for teaching and therefore became a teacher by profession. She received her BA degree from Sacred Heart Dominican College, Houston, TX. Thereafter, she continued her formal education by earning a Master’s degree from St. Louis University, St. Louis, MO. With these qualifications, she taught in many Catholic schools: St. Frances Cabrini, Alexandria, LA; Our Lady of Fatima, Texas City, TX; Immaculate Conception, Corsicana, TX; St. Ann’s, Salt Lake City, UT; St. Francis of Assisi, Houston, TX; O’Connell High School, Galveston, TX; and Incarnate Word Academy, Houston, TX. As a teacher, Sister Jacinta was known for her fairness. Several years after she left teaching, many students returned to express their appreciation for her high expectations and to express their gratitude for the quality of her teaching. Later, Sister ministered at the Houston Read Commission Literacy Program. She was greatly respected by children and parents alike. Sr. Jacinta retired from active ministry in 2007 to devote her life to prayer. Sister was grateful to her parents, family, friends, the Congregation, and above all, to God who blessed her and has accomplished in her any good she has done. Sr. Jacinta is survived by her sisters and brothers: Mrs. Agnes Ashcroft, Mr. John (& Anna) Slyne, Mrs. Teresa (& Flor) Louvell, Mrs. Patricia (& Walter) Kingston, and Mr. Finbarr (& Mary) Slyne, and several nieces, nephews, one grandnephew, James Slyne, and cousins.
