Obituary for Mr. Robert “Bob” Birk Robert “Bob” Birk, 95, of Columbus, passed from this life at 12:23 a.m. Thursday, July 19, 2018 at Columbus Regional Hospital. Mr. Birk was born January 12, 1923, in Bartholomew County, the son of Frank C. and Inez Thompson Birk. He was a member the graduating class of 1941 of Columbus High School. Mr. Birk was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II rising to the rank of Corporal. He participated in action against the enemy at, Cape Gloucester, New Britain, Okinawa, and the Ryukyu Islands. He reenlisted into the Marine Corp during the Korean Conflict. He rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant and was honorably discharged November 28, 1952. Mr. Birk had a long career in banking, he was the loan manager of the First National Bank in Columbus and retired as the loan manager at American Securities. He held membership in the Fraternal Order of Police, Columbus Moose Lodge No. 398, Columbus Elks Lodge No. 521, and American Legion Post 24. Mr. Birk is survived by his companion of 66 years, Marguerite Miller of Columbus; his nephew, Robert R. (Debra) Phillips of Columbus; a great-nephew, Chris Phillips of Columbus; a great-great niece, Lillian Jane Phillips of Columbus; and a great-great nephew, Hunter Baynum of Shelbyville. Mr. Birk was preceded in death by his parents and his sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Russel Phillips. The funeral service will be conducted at 12 p.m. Wednesday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Virgil Clotfelter officiating. Family and friends may gather for visitation from 10 a.m. until service time Wednesday. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery. Full military rites will be presented by the U.S. Marine Corps Ceremonial Unit and the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
