Obituary for Richard Roddy A final salute: Captain Richard Webster Roddy Sr. January 24, 1943 – June 6, 2017 Our favorite Marine uttered his last Ooh Rah on June 6, 2017 at 5 am. We want to take this opportunity to salute Richard Webster Roddy, Sr. We salute you Richard W Roddy, Sr for: · Being a man of integrity · Serving God faithfully · Working hard and playing hard · Knowing how to be serious yet still appreciate a great joke · Going the extra mile to make sure others’ needs were met · Demonstrating your love for others in very practical ways · Letting your yes be yes and your no be no The community salutes you Richard W Roddy, Sr for: · Serving our country unselfishly at a time when many people resented you for it · Being a champion of the underdog · Building quality affordable housing because you cared about the people who would live there · Supplying land for a fire department and recycling center for Lake Gaston · Serving others tirelessly, often times at your own expense · Making sure children in Warren County were getting a quality education · Providing jobs for people who were willing to try to work as hard as you We, salute you Richard W. Roddy, Sr. for teaching us to: · Appreciate the value of hard day’s work · Use money wisely, not only for ourselves, but to benefit others · Create and work with our hands · Stand up for ourselves and for others · Be proud of being different · Value discipline & respect · Contribute our gifts to make our community better “Rich” spent most of his adult life at Lake Gaston where he founded and owned Lake Gaston Supply Company (1972-199) in addition to many other ventures. He spent his childhood as the only son of Alice Jean Smith Roddy and Donald Webster Roddy in communities around Pittsburgh, PA. (Go Steelers, Pirates and Penguins). He went to college at West Virginia Wesleyan where he met his wife Ardith Janine Hollis Roddy and they married soon after graduation. They raised their children, Richard Jr. and erika, living on Lake Gaston year round, and remained there until moving to Waxhaw, NC in 2013 to be closer to Richard Jr. and medical care. Interesting things you may not know about Rich: He was an A-6 Intruder pilot and navigator for the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam war. He was an avid snow skier and spent warm weather months saving money so he could ski all winter. He served on the school board for Warren County Public Schools for 16 years. He helped found Lake Gaston Baptist Church as one of the original 5 trustees. If you knew Rich well, you know he was not one to waste words, so this is probably already too long. But while he has shed this earthly tent that has been nagging him severely since his stroke 7 years ago, he’s leaving behind some Roddy family: his wife, Ardie who now resides in Waxhaw, NC in the same neighborhood as Richard Jr. & his wife Christy and their three children Joshua, Madeline, and Hannah. Erika and her husband Steve “Coach Woody” Woodard live in Raleigh with their son Ian. Please join us to honor the life of Richard W. Roddy, Sr. on July 22, 2017 at Lake Gaston Baptist Church. We invite you to gather with us for a memorial service where we will laugh and cry, swap memories and stories, and share a meal together after the interment.
