Rev. Emma Lee Martin was affectionately known as “Mrs. Martin”, has now known sunrise, high noon and sunset. Her “sunrise” dawned in Camden, Mississippi on October 3, 1927, born to the union of Ambrose and Lenora Collins Simpson. Her “high noon” was the dynamic portion of her life that will continue to shine through the impact she made on her sons, daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her “sunset” of life was on June 26, 2018, when God called her home. Rev. Martin received her education from Camden School where she met the love of her life. She began her career by opening her private daycare for small children including grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. With compassion, she nurtured the babies she served until retirement. She was united in holy matrimony to Henry Lee Martin of Camden, Mississippi. They settled in Jackson, Mississippi and were blessed with five offspring: Henry, Mildred, Lenora, Lafayette, and Shelby. Her husband, Henry, Martin, and daughter, Lenora Angela Bradley, preceded her in death. Rev. Martin retired from her daycare after many years of service in nurturing countless babies and children as her own. She served in different ministries faithfully, she assisted her pastors, member of the Chancellor Choir, member of the Sisterhood Society, member of the Sunday School, prepared food for special events, spearheaded programs for special days, and always helped others in their endeavors. Rev Martin accepted Christ at an early age and joined Murphy Chapel AME Zion Church under the late Rev. R.L. Parstel. After moving to Jackson, she moved her membership from Murphy Chapel AME Zion Church to Blair Street AME Zion Church. Later, under, Bishop John C. Evans, Jr. she moved to Blair Metropolitan Church, which became Cathedral AME Zion Church. She accepted her calling to the ministry and delivered her trial sermon at Cathedral AME Zion Church under Bishop John C. Evans, Jr. Eventually, she became homesick for her home church and move her membership back to Greater Blair Street AME Zion Church, where she attended faithfully until her health failed. In 2012, she received her License Ordination from Bishop Mildred Hindes at St. Paul AME Zion Church in Canton, Mississippi. She spoke words of encouragement at various events and preached at Zion Hill AME Zion Church under the leadership of Rev. Octavia Berry. She always had a “Word” for anyone that she encountered, especially family members. On Tuesday, June 26, 2018, God needed one of His remnants; he extended her an invitation to come home to enjoy eternal rest. Rev Martin accepted God’s invitation. Rev. Martin will be remembered as a loyal wife, a good mother, believed in cleanliness, a fashion dresser with hats being her signature, and the best cook in Jackson. Her most popular food items were chicken and dressings, coconut and caramel cakes. On special occasion family members know what to look for and where to hide their favorite food. Visitation hours are Monday, July 2, 2018, between the hours of 12-6 p.m. at Peoples Funeral Home, Wake service will be held Monday, July 2, 2018, from 6-7 p.m. also at Peoples Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 3, 2018, at Greater Blair Street AME Church at 11:00 a.m. located at 1106 N. Blair Street Jackson, MS 39202. Interment will promptly follow at Garden Memorial Cemetery. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
