Peoria–Patrick Joseph Colgan, age 74, of Peoria, Illinois, formerly of Wyoming, passed away quietly on Friday, June 29, 2018 at Heartland Health Care Center in Henry, IL, in the company of family members. Pat was born on Feb. 3, 1944 in Macomb, IL. He was the son of Majella Harty Colgan and Joseph P. Colgan, who resided in Wyoming since 1947. Pat lived in Peoria since 1978. He is survived by his eleven siblings, Judy (Bob) Curran of Elmwood, IL; Joanne (Gene) Gill of Wyoming, IL; Tim (Patty) of Wyoming, IL; Colleen Colgan of San Francisco, CA; Paul (Phyllis) of Wheaton, IL; Philip (Geol Weirs) of San Francisco, CA; Jane (John) Francis of Boise, ID; Susan (Ken) Knapp of Magnolia, IL; Marty (Sue) of Palatine, IL; Greg of Redondo Beach, CA; and Tom (Gloria) of Glen Ellyn, IL; and numerous nieces and nephews. Pat was preceded in death by both of his parents and his nephew Daniel Gill. Pat was a member of the Catholic faith and he was a longtime professional in accounting, finance, and sales, with work in the agribusiness, financial, and retail fields. He had an inquisitive, analytical mind, plus a caring and generous heart. He was very devoted to his parents and extended family. He supported others with an attention to their needs, especially in matters of finance and paperwork advice. Pat was always well-dressed and enjoyed thoughtful conversations, good laughs and exploring the countryside by car. He was an avid reader of news, business, history and sports. He especially enjoyed following and encouraging the many details of life for more than a hundred relatives. The third child and oldest son in a family of twelve children, Pat grew up in Wyoming, played sports, especially basketball, and graduated from Wyoming High School. He learned about work, business and charity from his father Joe, the hometown John Deere and Behlen agricultural equipment dealer. He learned about kindness, grace and organization from his mother Majella. He learned about the importance of academics, cheerfulness, and caring for family from both parents. Pat graduated from the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana in 1966, with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. There he enjoyed meeting people from across the country and was inspired to travel the world. After graduation, he held a corporate position in auditing with John Deere and Company, based in Moline, IL. In his work, Pat traveled all across America and he was an early participant in international business travel. He visited numerous countries in Europe and Africa. Pat then worked with Bandag Corp., of Muscatine, IA, during the 1970’s. He returned to his roots in the 1980’s, working at the Colgan Company dealership in Wyoming, joining his father Joe, and brother Tim, in finance and management of the family business. Leading into retirement, Pat enjoyed working at both The Bell and the Joseph A. Bank clothing stores in Peoria, in the 2000’s. In retirement, he continued to help frequently with his parents’ long-term care. He also visited senior citizens and stayed in touch with his large Irish-American family network. He will be remembered and missed as a caring brother, mentor, and respected family touchstone. Pat received excellent care from the medical professionals at Illinois CancerCare in Peoria, including Dr. Madhuri Bajaj, and from OSF Hospice, and also Heartland Health Care. The visitation will be on Saturday, July 7 from 9:00 a.m.to 10:30 a.m. at Haskell-Hott Funeral Homes in Wyoming. The funeral Mass will follow at 11:00 a.m. at St. Dominic Catholic Church, Wyoming. Father John Cyr will officiate. Burial will be at St. Dominic Cemetery, Wyoming.
