Obituary for Ms. Leatha Sumella “Sammy” Higginbotham Higginbotham – Leatha Samella “Sammy” Higginbotham, age 79, of Lawtey, Florida passed away on July 26, 2018 at Windsor Health and Rehabilitation Center with her loving family by her side. Sammy was born in Ripley, Mississippi on June 18, 1939 to the late Ezra Gault and Ottie Sue Tatum Gault. She was raised in Bear Creek, Alabama and relocated to Lawtey, Florida as a teenager to be closer to family. Sammy was a longtime member of Faith Baptist Church of Starke where she enjoyed attending and praising her Lord and Savior. Sammy also enjoyed her careers throughout the years. She was a School Bus Driver, worked at Wal-Mart, managed a service station, a waitress, and worked as a Lunch Lady at Lawtey Elementary for 19 years. Sammy also enjoyed shopping and her family. She was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband of 8 years, James Cecil “J.C.” Higginbotham; sister, Dottie Sue Gault; and her great granddaughter, Bridgett Ann Norman. Sammy is survived by her loving children, Carl E. Griffis, Jr., Debra G. (Robert) Norman and Cathy K. (Randall) Higginbotham all of Lawtey, FL; her brother, William E. (Diane) Gault of Starke, FL; her 9 grandchildren, Carla, Jessica, Kristen, Michael, Eddie, Jason, Tiffany, Justin, and Darrin; 20 great grandchildren and 3 great -great grandchildren. A Celebration of Sammy’s Life will be held on Monday, July 30, 2018 at 11:00 am at Long Branch Baptist Church with Pastor Lester Austin officiating. Interment will follow at Long Branch Cemetery in Maxville, FL. The family will receive friends on Monday an hour prior to the service at the church.
