Obituary for John Young John R. Young, 85, of Somers, CT, beloved husband of Karen (Gulbrandsen) Young, entered into Eternal Rest on Sunday, July 22 2018. Son of the late William and Lucy (Rutherford) Young, John grew up in the Hazardville section of Enfield. He was a longtime resident of Somers. John proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. He had a career of over 40 years at CT Department of Transportation where he held the position of Assistant District Engineer for District 1. In his leisure time, John enjoyed reading, working in the yard, long discussions on history with his brother, Norman, and weekly trips to Friendly’s with his high school classmates “Thursday Morning Breakfast Club”. He was a member of the Somers Beautification Committee. In addition to his loving wife, John is survived by his children, Corinne Wassmuth(Roger), Kim Andrews, John Young(Betsy), Ken Young(Anicia); his stepchildren, Brian Decker(Jill), and Allison Watkins(Todd); his brother, Norman Young; 11 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister Evelyn, and his grandson Ryan. His family would like to thank his caregivers, Eugene, Destiny, Christine, Heidi Jo, Fran, and Amanda, and many others of the hospice staff for enabling him to remain at home throughout his entire illness. John’s family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, July 26, 2018 from 11 am to 1 pm at the Somers Funeral Home, 354 Main St. (route 190), Somers. A funeral service will follow at the funeral home at 1pm. Burial will follow the service at Somers Center Cemetery, 81 Battle St, Somers.
