Jean Satterfield Penland 2018

Jean Smith Satterfield Penland, 85, of Candler, passed away Sunday, July 29, 2018 at the CarePartners Solace Center. A native of Mooresville, NC, Jean was a daughter of the late Rev. M.D. and Mamie Smith. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Buster T. Satterfield, and her second husband, Thomas Penland. Mrs. Penland was a graduate of Candler High School, and Mars Hill College. She worked for American Enka/BASF for 40 years. She was also a member, deacon, and choir member of Hominy Baptist Church. Surviving are her daughters, Diane Satterfield and Rev. Donna Shook and husband Steve; grandsons, Hunter and Connor Shook; sisters, Evelyn Wright and husband Robert, and Lorena Bumgarner and husband Ed; brother, Truitt Smith and wife Rachel; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services for Mrs. Penland will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday at Hominy Baptist Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue is assisting the family.
