George William DiMella Sr 1939 2018

Obituary for George DiMella Sr. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of George William DiMella Sr. at Midstate Medical Center on Friday July 20th at the age of 78. He left this world as stubbornly as he lived it, initially kicking and screaming against his cancer and finally cursing and ornery that his ticket to heaven was not punched fast enough. Everything on his own terms. George, the fifth of six children was born on December 28th, 1939 and grew up on Fishers Island, NY, where he graduated third in his high school class of 3 students (a long-running joke). After 4 years in the Navy George began his family and worked proudly as a firefighter for the city of Meriden for 31 years from 1969 until his retirement in July of 2000. George was a people-person and was quick to laugh and make friends with anyone. He would jokingly boast that he could out-drive Tiger Woods on the golf course, take all his friends’ money playing cards, and he loved going out for Friday night pizza every week with his core group of friends. George was an avid sports fan, coaching Jack Barry little league for 17 years, rooting for the Yankees and New York Giants, watching his children through multiple sports endeavors, and cheering in the bleachers for Maloney High School basketball and football games decades after his own children had graduated. George was predeceased by his older siblings Anthony and Leo and his parents, Antonio and Julia. George was a devout family man and is survived by his wife of 55 years, Anne DiMella, and his children, Jeffrey DiMella of Meriden, William DiMella (Silvia) of Meriden, Christopher DiMella (Jacqueline) of Brewster, NY, George DiMella of Jacksonville, FL, and Jennifer Jarvis (Justin) of Southbridge, MA. George was also surrounded and deeply loved by his grandchildren Taylor, Stephanie, Trina, Drew, Alina, Brenna, Braedon, Amelie, his great grand-child Jennifer and his siblings Mary Thurlow, Rose DiMella Manchester, and Fred DiMella (Valerie). George’s family will receive relatives and friends at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., Meriden on Thursday July 26th from 4 – 6:30 p.m. A service of Remembrance will commence at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be private.
