Garland R. Whitaker, 75, of Newport, passed away Sunday, July 1, 2018, at his home. There will be a graveside service held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 6, 2018, at Amariah Garner Cemetery, officiated by Reverend Norm Waligora. Garland was a career educator in the Carteret County School System and the founding Headmaster of Gramercy Christian School. He is survived by his wife, Betty Gould Whitaker, of the home; daughters, Leigh Madlinger and husband, Alex, of Mechanicsville, VA, and Holly Whitaker of Hubert; sons, Tad Whitaker of Newport and Everette Whitaker and wife, Allison, of Newport; sisters, Barbara Robinson of Newport, Jean Temple and husband, Berlyn, of Morehead City, Betty Jo Gainey of Morehead City and Delores Whitaker of Newport; brother, Kenny Whitaker of Newport; grandchildren, Alex Madlinger, Ben Madlinger, Joe DeSapio, Mackenzie Whitaker, Peyton Whitaker, Jaxon Whitaker, Mandy Livingston and Connor Livingston; and great-grandchild, Emma Leigh DeSapio,. Family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 5, 2018, at Faith Evangelical Bible Church at 8170 Highway 70 in Newport.
