Fern E. Noel, 99, of Waverly, Iowa, died on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at the Shell Rock Healthcare Center in Shell Rock, Iowa. Fern Estela Noel was born on May 2, 1919, the daughter of Willis and Susie (Dean) Luitjens near Grundy Center. Fern attended country school near Wellsburg, and Shell Rock High School, graduating in 1937. On October 15, 1939, Fern was united in marriage to Vancil Frank Noel Sr., at the First Baptist Church in Waverly. The couple farmed at several locations until 1960. Fern was a homemaker and later cooked at The Hub and Bartels breakfast. After Vancil’s retirement in 1980, the couple spent their winters in Arizona and their summers in their home, northeast of Waverly. Vancil Sr. died in November of 1991. Fern was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Waverly. She was devoted to and attended many events at the Waverly Senior Center. Fern enjoyed reading mystery novels, playing cards, traveling, cooking, and gardening. Fern is survived by a son, Terry (Janet) Noel of Waverly, Iowa; nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; many great-great grandchildren; and daughter-in-law, Donna Noel of Waverly, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vancil; her parents; two daughters Deanne Renee in infancy and Nancy in June of 1963; son, Vancil Noel Jr. in March of 2013; three brothers; and two sisters. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 6, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Waverly, with Pastor Carolyn Bowers officiating. Burial will be in Harlington Cemetery, Waverly. Visitation will be at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Waverly on Sunday, August 5, where the family will greet friends from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to Fern’s family for later designation.
