Daniel Earl Hurst, 94, passed away in Orem, Utah, on July 15, 2018. Earl was born July 27, 1923, to Roy Angus and Mildred Theresa Call Hurst in Sanderson, Texas. After he graduated from Sanderson High School in 1941, he attended Brigham Young University for one year, 1941-42. He transferred to Texas A&M so that he could study engineering and be of more service during World War II. He served in the US Navy, 1945-46, and then graduated from Texas A&M in 1947. He married the love of his life, Beth Bryson, in the Arizona Temple on August 20, 1948. He began his career with Chevron Oil in 1948 in New Orleans, assisting in designing its first offshore drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico. In 1975, he transferred to London, where he managed the design and installation of drilling platforms in the Ninian Field of the North Sea, one of which was at the time the largest manmade object designed to be moved (as it was towed into place). In 1981, he transferred to Denver and managed Chevron Shale Oil. In 1985, he was tapped to direct Western Australia Petroleum, a Chevron company in Perth, Australia, and managed oil production near Barrow Island. He retired in 1987. Earl was a lifelong, dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as bishop in New Orleans (1956-69) and was a counselor to stake president Melvin Gruwell. In London, he served as a high councilor and bishopric counselor. In Perth, he was an advisor to the young adults. Earl and Beth served six full-time missions. Earl was called as secretary to the area presidency in Sydney, Australia, working with John Sonnenberg and his counselors. He then served as president of the California San Bernardino Mission (1989-92). He served as a coordinator in the Church Missionary Department, and then as president of the Australia Melbourne Mission (1994-95). He was a district president at the Provo Missionary Training Center and then served as counselor in the Provo MTC presidency with David B. Wirthlin and Karl Farnsworth (2001-03). Later, he loved teaching classes at the Provo Senior MTC and teaching youth and seniors of the Orem Cascade Fifth Ward as they prepared to serve missions. He is survived by his five children: Vivian James, Brenda Ralls, Marshall (Jolene) Hurst, Jennifer (Jesse) Hurlbut, Connie (John) Oliver; 16 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred (Grant) Maw and Betty (Vernon) Carlson; and brother-in-law Maurice (Joan) Bryson. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beth; brother, Roy Joseph Hurst, and sister Florence Wendel. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 21, 2018, at the LDS church at 1051 E. 200 North, Orem. Viewings will be held Friday, July 20, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., at Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 S. State St., Orem, and on Saturday from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. at the church.
