Obituary for Mack Tipton Mack Tipton, age 95, Erwin, passed away Saturday, June 2, 2018 at Summit View of Rocky Top, Lake City. He was a native of Yancey County, NC but had lived most of his life in Unicoi County and was a son of the late Sam H. and Sarah Bean Tipton. Mack attended Fellowship Free Will Baptist Church. He worked for the Clinchfield Railroad for nineteen years until his retirement in 1982. He was a US Army veteran where he was a Combat Infantryman and received the Distinguished Unit Badge, World War II Victory Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, AP Theater Ribbon with Three Bronze Service Stars and One Bronze Arrowhead, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with Two Bronze Stars, and the Purple Heart. Mack loved to fish, hunt, go camping, and took pride in raising a vegetable garden. He enjoyed going places where he could visit and talk a lot with his family and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Lillian Hazel Tipton on November 17, 2009; son-in-law, James Widener, Jr.; grandson, Tony Shane Hensley, and twelve siblings. Mack leaves behind to cherish his memory, two daughters: Doris Widener, Greeneville, and Karen Campbell, Erwin; three grandsons; Jeff Hensley, Jason Campbell, and Ronnie Widener; six great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews also survive. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 PM on Monday, June 4, 2018 in the Robert Ledford Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Roger Laws will officiate at the 8:00 PM funeral service. Music will be provided by Alan Foster. Committal service will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday in the Evergreen Cemetery. Grandsons and friends will serve as pallbearers. Military Honors will be rendered by the Carter County Honor Guard. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home by 12:30 PM Tuesday to go in procession to the cemetery.
