Kathryn “Kay” (Mashione) Jacobs passed away on Memorial Day, May 28, 2018 in Spokane Valley, Washington. She was born on July 6, 1929 in Wall, Pennsylvania to Frank and Stella (Eskievich) Mashione. She was proceeded in death by her parents, two brothers, and sister. Kay was a longtime Anchorage resident. She arrived in Alaska in 1959 via the Alcan Highway with her husband Leonard Nelson and three children a few months after statehood. Kay was a real pioneer woman. She and family even homesteaded a 160-acre parcel in Stuckagain Heights in Anchorage after the 1964 earthquake. Kay was a stay-at-home mom until her divorce from her first husband. She then worked for the Borough (municipality) of Anchorage where she met the love of her life, Arthur “Art” Jacobs. They were happily married for 23 years. He passed away in 2000. They traveled extensively and especially enjoyed their many trips to Hawaii. Kay continued her travels with her best friend Mary Jo Whittington, living by the adage “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas”. She was also able to enjoy many trips with her sister, Rosella to Pennsylvania and Naples, Florida. She moved to Liberty Lake, Washington in 2015. Some of Kay’s favorite things included bald eagles in Alaska and quails in Washington, cooking fabulous meals for the family, Caesar the cat, walking the coastal trail in Anchorage, cheese enchiladas and margaritas, slot machines in Las Vegas and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Her surviving family include her four children: Janice Nelson of Liberty Lake, Washington; Leonard Nelson, Donnie Nelson and Sandie Nelson of Anchorage, Alaska; five grandchildren: Nicholas Demming of Spokane Valley, Washington; Anya Mattioda of Liberty Lake, Washington; Michael Dozark and Teja Dozark of Anchorage, Alaska and James Dozark of Palmer, Alaska; as well as her six great-grandchildren. A service will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe,3900 Wisconsin St, Anchorage; followed by burial at Fort Richardson National Cemetery on Tuesday June 5th.
