Obituary for Jimmie Lee Bryson Jimmie L. Bryson was quite the athlete, competitive not only on the field and diving board, but also in life. Jimmie attended Dunbar High School (1961-1964) where as a sophomore; he earned the position of first string quarterback on the Blue Devils football team. He lettered each year in football and in 1963 was among seven Blue Devils to receive special awards, his for academics and leadership. Jimmie and the team won four district titles and one state championship. He received four full college football scholarship offers and ultimately chose to attend Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, NC. At JCSU, he had the opportunity to play football or become the team manager/statistician and compete on the swim diving team. He chose the latter. He went on to become one of the conference’s most outstanding divers and an attribute to the JCSU Bulls team. In 1968, he was ALL-CIAA for the diving competition on the one-meter board at Howard University, Washington, DC. He received his B. S. degree in 1969 and went on to serve his country in the United States Marine Corps. After college and military, he entered the job market and became the first black field representative for Atlas Supply Company. Later returning to his home town, he joined the Lexington Police Department. There he came up through the ranks to become a Lieutenant. He was the first black police officer in Lexington to receive the Advance Law Enforcement certificate from the State of NC Department of Justice. In 2001 he retired after 25 years of service. After retiring, he worked part time at Wake Forest Baptist Health-Lexington Medical Center in outpatient for approximately five years. Jimmie was a volunteer for Hospice of Davidson County. He was a member of the NC Retired Peace Officers Assoc., Inc. and a member of American Legion Post 8. In college he was a member of the Grove Phi Grove service fraternity. Jimmie was inducted into the Lexington Hall of Fame Class of 2013. He was of Baptist faith and a member of First Baptist Church, Village Dr. He had a love for football and the Carolina Panthers was his favorite team. He also enjoyed boating, fishing and golf. He had a passion for exercising, which he did religiously three days a week at the Lexington YMCA until his health no longer allowed him continue. Jimmie was preceded in death by his parents, James and Grace Hargrave Bryson; an infant brother; a grandson, Cameron Bryson and step-daughter, LaTonja A. Lanier. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 39 years, Alvaretta C. Bryson; two children, Jimmie Bryson II (Amanda) and Jenise Wooten (Cory); four grandchildren of whom he was so proud: Odessa Bryson, Chloe, Bryson and Morgan Emehel; a step-grandson, Noah A. Lanier of the home; two sisters, Shirley Ann Bryson and Ella Mae Bush; two nieces, Latonya Manning and Tamara Delbridge (Earl); a nephew, Jonathan Bush; a great niece and nephew, Zoe and Emory Delbridge and a host of loving cousins, relatives, in-laws and friends. The Funeral Service will be held Thursday at 1:00pm at First Baptist Church, Village Dr. with family visitation at 12:30. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Memorial Park with full Military honors.
