Mary Patricia McDonough, 93, died after a long illness on May 18, 2018 in Fairfax, VA. She passed away peacefully with her family at her side. Her husband of 60 years, Major General Joseph C. McDonough (former United States Commander, Berlin) passed away in 2005. Mrs. McDonough was born in 1925 in Richmond, Indiana to Walter and Anna Maria Aaron. Over the course of 33 years, Mrs. McDonough and her family moved more than 20 times to locations throughout the U.S. as well as England, Germany, and Turkey. In addition to raising three children, she was active in the military communities at each station. After her husband retired from the Army in 1978, they moved back to Annapolis, MD, where she was a volunteer at Anne Arundel Community Hospital. In 1998, they moved to Leisure World in Lansdowne, VA where she was also a volunteer at INOVA Loudoun Hospital. Mrs. McDonough was a member of St John’s Catholic Church in Leesburg, VA and then St. Teresa’s Catholic Church in Ashburn, VA. She is survived by three sons: Joseph C. McDonough of Corona Del Mar, CA; Thomas M. McDonough of McLean, VA; Robert T. McDonough of New York, NY; and two grandchildren. She will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.
