Obituary for Betty Anne Dishner Barksdale Mattson Betty Anne Dishner Barksdale Mattson, of Duffield, Virginia died May 24th, 2018 at Johnson City Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Venus Dishner of Duffield, Virginia, husbands, Dr. Matt W. Mattson Jr. of Bristol, Tennessee and Russell R. Barksdale Sr., of Indianapolis, Indiana, and four brothers—William, Clyde, James, and Buster Dishner; and, four sisters—Mae Rutter, Reba Hayes, Clara Hidalgo, and Wanda Barker. She is survived by one sister—Edith Aline Finkle of Johnson City, Tennessee. Betty and her husband were former owners of CSU Corporation. Betty was an active member of her community, working at several local stores and serving as a project leader for the Homeless Veteran Program for the Department of Veteran’s Affairs. She was also an active member of the Republican Re-election Committee and their Judicial Watch. Betty was a veteran of the United States Air Force during the Korean War and served in three military commands—MATS at Andrew Air Force Base, 12th Air Force, NATO Commands in Ramstein Germany, and Air Training Command at Biloxi, Mississippi. She was known best for her love “for God and Country”, and she spoke at several local elementary schools on her life’s meaning of “Duty, Honor, and Country.” Betty is survived by her son, Russell Barksdale, Jr. of Boones Mill, Virginia and his wife Katie, three grandsons—Christian Barksdale and wife Savannah of Roanoke, Virginia; Nathaniel and Joshua Barksdale of Long Beach, New York; and one great-grandson – Wyatt Michael Barksdale of Roanoke, Virginia. Her family also includes many nieces and nephews including: William Dishner Jr. of Kingsport, Clyde Dishner Jr. of North Carolina, Mark and Mike Finkle of Bristol, Priscilla Williams of North Carolina, Jean Dishner Moore of Pennington Gap, Virginia, Wendi Stapleton of North Carolina, Annah Courts of Knoxville, Harvey Barker, Sheryl McKenzie and Erin Miller of Georgia, and the Robert Dishner boys—Keith, Jimmy, Terry, and Gregory of Duffield. The family wants to offer special thanks to: Amanda Adler and Bill Dishner Jr. for their tireless devotion to Betty during her final days, Dr. Annamarie Witmer of the VA Hospital and their staff along with Johnson City Medical Center who went beyond the call of duty in supplying the medical services that were needed. The family will receive friends Thursday, May 31, 2018 from 12:00 PM until 1:00 PM at Oakley-Cook Funeral Home in Bristol, Tennessee. The Funeral Service will follow at 1:00 PM. Burial will follow where Betty will be buried alongside of her husband Matt Mattson Jr. in the Glenwood Cemetery, Bristol, Tennessee with full military honors to be rendered by DAV Chapter #40 Honor Guard and members of Shaw Air Force Base Honor Guard.
