Obituary for Vernon R. Meyer Wooster — Vernon R. Meyer, age 93, of Wooster, died Monday, May 21, 2018, at Brenn-Field Nursing Center in Orrville, following a period of declining health. Vernon was born on June 29, 1924, in Sterling, Ohio, to Elmer and Sarah (Liechty) Meyer and graduated from Creston High School in 1941. Vernon went to Goshen College for his Undergraduate Degree and then Kent State University for a Master’s Degree in Education. He married Geneva (Ulrich) Meyer on July 31, 1949, in Eureka, IL. She survives. He worked as a teacher for Wooster City Schools for 25 years, retiring in 1977. He then worked at Freedlander’s for 13 years. Vernon was a member of Smithville Mennonite Church. He was a Sunday school teacher, superintendent, treasurer, and trustee at the church. In retirement he enjoyed making latchhook rugs, putting together jigsaw puzzles, watching Jeopardy, and golfing. As a pacifist he served in the Civilian Public Service from 1943-1946. After the war he was a seagoing cowboy and took 778 horses over to Poland. Surviving, in addition to his wife are three daughters, Rebecca (Dale) Geiser of Apple Creek, Kathryn (Michael) McKernan of Williamsport, PA, and Ruth (Robert) Shetler of Orrville; two sons, James (Barbara) Meyer of St. Petersburg, FL, and Harold (Renee) Meyer of Massillon; 17 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and a sister, Bernice Miller of Walnut Creek. He was preceded in death by both parents; brothers Paul, Fred, and Arthur Meyer; and a sister, Lois King. Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday May 26, 2018 at Smithville Mennonite Church, 6097 Akron Road, Smithville with Pastor Todd Martin officiating. Burial will take place at Smithville Mennonite Cemetery in Smithville. Friends may call on Friday at the church from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Auble Funeral Home in Orrville is handling the arrangements.
