Farie Irene Griffith, born February 24, 1921 in Pike County, to Elwyn (Rock) and Mable Anderson Thompson, passed away at Maple View Manor, Bainbridge Ohio, on May 2, 2018. On September 20, 1939, she married Lester L. Griffith, who preceded her in death on January 2, 2002. Surviving are her children, Gerald K. (Janet) Griffith, Phyllis Mathis and Connie “Susie” (Dan) Scott, all of Chillicothe Ohio. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Douglas (Deena) Griffith of Columbus, Kelly (Lori) Mathis, Christopher (Christy) Mathis, Kevin (Lisa) Mathis, Erin Scott Jones, and Bryan (Darcie) Scott, granddaughter-in-law, Dani Griffith of Columbus, sixteen great-grandchildren, Alyssa Mathis (Jordan Hellwig), Ryan Mathis, Austin and Connor Mathis, Ashley, Scott, and Matthew Griffith, Isabelle, Alexandra, Gabriella, and Indiana Mathis, Kelsey Cottrill, Lindsey and Emily Jones, Kayne and Rhett Scott, and great-great-granddaughter, Vera Hellwig expected May 23. Irene is also survived by her brothers, Stace (Shirley) Thompson, John “Pete” (Phyllis) Thompson of Bainbridge, sister, Alice Thompson Black of Greenfield, brother-in-law, Harold Wiebenga of Hanford California, and sister-in-law, Jenny Thompson of Bainbridge. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, son-in-law, Luther Mathis, grandsons, Gerald, Ronald and Gregory Griffith, sisters, Pauline Thompson, Helen Thompson Wiebenga, Mary Lou Thompson White, brother-in-law, Henry White, and her brother, Paul Elwyn Thompson. Irene graduated from Bainbridge High School where she represented her school as queen in the Northwest Territory Sesquicentennial queen pageant in 1938. Irene and her husband Lester owned and operated a corner grocery store for many years in Greenfield Ohio, and later owned and operated the Skate-A-Way Roller Rink, Chillicothe Ohio, from 1953 to their retirement in 1980. Irene was a member of Greenfield United Brethren Church for many years and attended Bainbridge Church of Christ until her confinement. The family wishes to thank the staff of Maple View Manor and Heartland Hospice for their compassionate care of Irene. A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family at Greenfield Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to gather at 12pm on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 for a celebration of Irene’s life at Calvary Baptist Church, 2486 Anderson Station Road, Chillicothe Ohio.
