Obituary of Joe Vaughan Joe Luther Vaughan, 77, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away at his home Tuesday, April 10, 2018, following a period of declining health. A celebration of his life will begin at 2 p.m. Friday, April 13, at his church, St. Stephens Lutheran. The Rev. Ruth Sipe will officiate, and burial will follow in the church cemetery. The Vaughan family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Gordon Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant. Joe was born in Rowan County on December 23, 1940, son of the late Marie Barger Vaughan. In retirement, the former career truck driver enjoyed mowing yards and spending time with friends at the Rockwell YMCA. He was a member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church where he had served on church council and was a lifetime member of Lutheran men in mission. Joe had many fond memories of sharing his faith through Christian fellowship. He also served on the board of Northeast VFD for many years. Joe is survived by his wife of 55 years, Evelyn Pless Vaughan of the home; two daughters, Sheila V. Miller (Kenneth), and Debra V. Lear (Bobby); four grandchildren, Peyton Lear, Ethan Lear, Bobby Lear, IV, and Stephanie Wright (Michael); and two great-grandchildren, Colton Wright and Kyrie Lear.
