Heaven currently smells like a fresh baked coconut pie made by the queen of coconut pies herself, Jean Wofford. Martha Jean Quillin Wofford, 89, left her earthly body behind on Friday May 18th and entered her heavenly home, whole once again. Born July 14, 1928 to Mary and William Quillin of Big Stone Gap Virginia, Jean was one of seven children. She is survived by her youngest brother, Johnny and his wife Jeanette, but is finally reunited with her sisters Ruth, Jennie, Willie, and her brother Jim, all of whom she loved dearly. She is also reunited with her late husband, Dr. Ben Wofford who she’s missed every day since he’s been gone. Jean leaves behind a massive community of people who already feel her absence deeply. Her sons Jeff and Jim, daughter-in-love Jennifer, grandchildren Jessica, Christopher, Jared, Denise, and Molly, great-grandchildren, Stella and Liam, nephews and nieces; Kathy, David, Mary Ruth, Steve, John Michael, Amy, Mike, Jennifer, and Mark, best friend Mary Ann, the Choir and Sharpe Bible Class at First United Methodist Church, the CNA’s, nurses, therapists and others at Abernethy Laurels who have loved and cared for her for the last two years, and many countless people whose lives she touched will miss her dearly but are so happy and relieved that she is whole again, baking pies and digging in the most beautiful garden imaginable…and doling out love pats to everyone she can! Jean loved people and enjoyed volunteering at The Corner Table soup kitchen so the family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her name to feed the hungry of Newton or choose to volunteer some time with the residents of Abernathy Laurels playing Jean’s favorite game- noodle ball! The family would like to thank everyone for their kind words, thoughts, prayers, and visits to Jean- especially over the last two years she was in Abernathy. She was a social butterfly with a lot of friends and every visit or card meant so much to her. The family will receive friends Friday, June 1st, 2018 First United Methodist Church Conover from 3:00pm – 4:00pm. A memorial service will follow at 4:00 pm with Dr. Gary Royals officiating.
