Lorraine J Platis 1941 2018

Obituary of Lorraine Platis Lorraine Joyce (Schmitt) Platis, 76, of Rome was called home at The Lighthouse of Care in Arlington, Texas on May 1, 2018. As she was always in this life, she was surrounded at that moment by her loving family, both in person and in spirit. The eldest of five siblings, she was born in 1941 in Rome to Mabel Spink Schmitt and Andrew Schmitt. Her parents predeceased her. Lorraine attended Rome City schools and graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1958. Following high school, Lorraine served her country with great dedication for 35 years, as an administrative assistant with the United States Air Force Rome Laboratory. She retired from her career in 1999. Lorraine married the love of her life, John Platis, at Saint Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Rome. They had a wonderful, loving marriage that lasted until John’s passing in 2009, but he was never far from her heart and mind. She had a profoundly full and fulfilling life and filled many vital roles: family matriarch, advisor, friend and community member. She loved her family fiercely and her friends with that same commitment. Lorraine freely expressed her love for her family and friends; if you were on the receiving end of that love, you knew it! She was fun, funny, kind, intelligent, opinionated, reverent and irreverent—and first to offer aid when it was needed. Her laugh was contagious, laughing often and from the very center of her being. She was so many things, but above all else—she was MOM. This was her greatest role and she was protectively maternal to the end. Family meant everything to her. Lorraine leaves her daughter, Pamela (Paul) Greenberg of Brunswick, New York, and sons, John (Michele) Platis of Mansfield, Texas, Stephen (Michele) Platis of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Richard (Danielle) Platis of Rome, New York. She also leaves behind her beloved granddaughters, Alexa Platis, Abigail Greenberg, and Caitlin Platis, as well as brothers George (Elizabeth) Schmitt and Gary (Sue) Schmitt. She is predeceased by sisters Henrietta (Judy) Schmitt Fields, and Susan Schmitt Lambert. The Earth is a less-beautiful place, because Lorraine no longer stands on it. But Heaven, including her treasured John, her parents and sisters—are rejoicing because they are reunited today in love, and, we know—gales of laughter. Family and friends may call at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St, Rome on Monday, May 7th from 4-7 PM. A mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday, May 8th at 2 PM at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church, 1807 Bedford St, Rome, with burial immediately following at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Rome, NY. The family would like to thank the Upstate Comprehensive Stroke Center in Syracuse, NY and The Lighthouse of Care in Arlington, TX for their extraordinary care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Lorraine’s honor to: St Paul’s Roman Catholic Church Memorial Fund, 1807 Bedford Street, Rome, NY 13440.
