Obituary of Kenneth Nichols Kenneth E. “Ken” Nichols, age 67, of Painted Post, NY passed away on Tuesday, May 29, 2018 at home surrounded by family. Ken was born on December 18, 1950 in Jacksonville, NC, the son of the late Perry E. and the late Betty M. (Smith) Nichols. He married Carol Marie Whittier on August 11, 1973 at the Riverside Wesleyan Church. Ken worked in the trades for Corning, Inc., retiring in 2013 with 40 years of service. Ken was a member of the Corning Local Union 1000. He was an avid sports fan and for many years coached and umpired baseball, basketball and softball for local youth teams. He enjoyed watching the NY Yankees and the NY Giants. After retirement, Carol and Ken enjoyed their winters in Tampa, Florida and he began working for the NY Yankees during their spring trainings from 2013-2015. His greatest joy was his family – often taking his grandchildren on ice-cream trips and joyrides to Frog Hollow. He is survived by his loving wife, Carol M. Nichols; daughter, Karen Nichols of Painted Post, NY; son, James (Sarah) Nichols of Painted Post, NY; grandchildren: Brooke Austin, Madison Nichols and Hannah Nichols; great grandchild, Madilynn Austin who affectionately called her grandfather, Jimbo; brother, Steve Nichols of SC; sisters: Toni (Gary) Brown of Campbell, NY and Lisa (Harold) Bates of Painted Post, NY; brothers-in-law: Raymond Bruce of PA, Fred (Becky) Whittier of Corning, NY; sisters-in-law: Sharon (Dave) Peris of Painted Post, NY, Lettie (Chuck) Mayer of Caton, NY, Marsha (Gordy) Huyler of Corning, NY, Virginia (Ron) Gillespie of Corning, NY; special aunt and uncle, Harry and Virginia Albin of MA; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Ken was predeceased by his sister, Sherry Bruce; niece, Stacy Nichols; father and mother-in-law, James and Gertrude Whittier; and sister-in-law, Mary Terwilliger. Family and friends are invited to call on Thursday, May 31, 2018 from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Carpenter’s Funeral Home, 14 E. Pulteney St., Corning, NY. A funeral service will immediately follow at the funeral home at 2:00 pm, Chuck Mayer officiating.
