Gerlinde Hedwig Sly, a longtime area resident, entered into rest on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at Nyack Hospital, Nyack, NY. She was 89 years of age. Linda was born June 30, 1928 in Memel, Lithuania. She attended the Lette College in Berlin, Germany studying English and Russian. In 1955 she met the love of her life Theodore Sly while teaching German to American soldiers stationed in Germany. Linda eventually moved to the United States to be closer to Ted. The two were soon married and settled down in New Hampton, NY. Linda continued her studies in the field of education. In 1966 she earned her PhD in Literature from NYU and went on to become a language professor at Rockland Community College. Linda was able to speak 7 different languages including Lithuanian, German, Russian and English. Linda loved animals, being outdoors, boating and spending time with family and friends. She was passionate about her church and was an active member of the community helping countless charities. Linda leaves behind her beloved husband Theodore, sister-in-law Vera Sly, nephew John Sly and his wife Antonette Sly and their children Landon and Jackson in addition to several nieces and nephews in Germany. Linda also leaves behind numerous loved animals including her dog Princess. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 12-2 PM Wednesday, May 23rd at the Cornelius, Dodd & Connell Funeral Home, 26 Grove St., Middletown, NY. Funeral Services will begin at 2 PM with the Reverend Steve Ruelke officiating. Entombment will follow in the family mausoleum in Pine Hill Cemetery in the Town of Wawayanda, NY. Memorial contributions in Linda’s name may be made to Pets Alive, 363 Derby Road, Middletown, NY 10940. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Cornelius, Dodd & Connell Funeral Home, Middletown, NY.
