Obituary for Brian Mitchell Mitchell, Brian James was born July 25, 1936 in Minneapolis and died May 29, 2018 in Saint Louis. A devoted and loving husband for 58 years to his wife, Judith Mitchell, and a devoted and loving father to his two sons, David and Peter, their wives, Kristen and Julie, and the grandchildren, Merritt, Haley, Colby and Lydia. Brian was blessed with many great colleagues and friends at Saint Louis University and around the world from his work as a geophysicist. He enjoyed fellowship and earned awards from the American Geophysics Union and the Saint Louis Academy of Sciences. He instilled a passion for exploration and inquiry in everyone around him. He set a superb example to all for his patience, kindness and understanding. He overcame his fear of heights as an Army paratrooper and propelled his body & mind to exceptional levels of endurance as a marathoner and completing the Ironman world championship at age 63. He enjoyed running with his friends in Forest Park, the 620 Group, and aptly was nicknamed Tremor. Brian passed peacefully surrounded by family and we are all blessed, thankful and better for having shared our lives together. A memorial service will be held Sat., June 9, 2:00 p.m. at Laclede Groves Chapel,723 S. Laclede Station Rd., Webster Groves. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Brian Mitchell Fund for Earth and Atmospheric Sciences of Saint Louis University, One North Grand Blvd., Dubourg Hall, Room 319, St. Louis MO 63103 or make a donation to the charity of your choice.
