Sanford D Smith 2018

Mr. Sanford D. Smith, 94, of Waynesboro, PA, passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2018 in Chambersburg Hospital. Born March 16, 1924 in Buena Vista, PA, he was the son of the late Rufus E. and Anna Mae (Eigenbrode) Smith. He was a graduate of Washington Township High School with the Class of 1942. He later attended Mercersburg Academy in 1947 and graduated from Temple University School of Pharmacy in 1951. Mr. Smith served in the United States Navy from January 1943 to March 1946 in the South Pacific, Annapolis Naval Hospital, Philippines, China and Japan. He witnessed the result of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima and the signing of the treaty with Japan from Naval supply ship on September 2, 1945 in Tokyo Bay, Japan. He and his wife, the late Mrs. Helen Smith, were married January 24, 1954 in Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro. Mrs. Smith passed away June 22, 2010. Mr. Smith was a pharmacist at Baker and Minnich Pharmacy in Waynesboro and Peoples Drugstore in Frederick, MD. He later owned and operated Smith’s Drugstore, Waynesboro from 1955-1986. He also owned Summit Pharmacy, Blue Ridge Summit, PA. He retired in 1992. He was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro where he participated with the church youth group and served on church council. He also was a member of Joe Stickell American Legion Post #15, Antietam Historical Society, AmVets, Waynesboro Fish and Game Association, Narrows Rod and Gun Club, B.P.O. Elks Lodge #731, National Association of Retail Druggists, National Rifle Association, Director of Citizen’s National Bank of Southern Pennsylvania and former member of Waynesboro Country Club. Mr. Smith enjoyed hunting, golfing, woodworking, traveling, collecting pharmacy memorabilia, hiking and mushroom hunting. He is survived by two children, Barbara Smith and Sanford A. Smith, both of Waynesboro; three grandchildren, Sarah Smith, Jamie Ensley and Dr. Joshua Smith; and nieces and nephews, Daniel Creager, Steve Morrow, Jean Smith and Patricia Shoemaker. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Creager and Amy Royer; two brothers, Lloyd Smith and Rev. Laurean Smith; niece Shirley Creager; and nephew, Llewellyn Smith. Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Saturday, May 26, 2018, in The Evangelical Lutheran Church 43 S. Church Street, Waynesboro with Pastor Dennis Beaver officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro, where military graveside honors will be conducted by the honor guard of Charles Nitterhouse V.F.W. Post #1599, Chambersburg. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, Saturday morning, in the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Evangelical Lutheran Church, 43 S.
