Obituary of Ray Hoberg Ray Julius Hoberg, age 91, of Sacred Heart, died Friday, April 6, 2018, at the Renville County Hospital in Olivia, Minnesota. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 12, 2018, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Sacred Heart. The Rev. Dale Svendsen will officiate. Burial will be with military honors in Our Savior’s Cemetery in Sacred Heart. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. and will continue on Thursday one hour prior to the services, all at the church in Sacred Heart. Arrangements are with Dirks-Blem Funeral Service, Renville, Minnesota. Ray Julius Hoberg was born on May 20, 1926, in Butterfield, Minnesota to William Earl and Bessie (Nelson) Hoberg. At the age of four, he and his family moved to Sacred Heart, and he graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1944. Ray served his country in the United States Navy from October of 1944 until August of 1946. During this time, he was aboard the USS Lunga Point CVE-94, an aircraft carrier, tasked with returning allied prisoners of war. Following the service, he returned to Sacred Heart and worked for Knutson Brothers in Granite Falls. He was united in marriage to Doris Nord on February 19, 1949, at Doris’ parent’s home in Sacred Heart. Ray and his brother, Jim, continued their education at Dunwoody in Minneapolis, studying to be mechanical contractors. They returned to Sacred Heart and started Hoberg Brothers, Inc. which they ran until 1984. After closing their business, Ray continued to work in the industry, and in later years, he helped area farmers in the spring and the fall. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and served on the church council. He was also a member of the Sacred Heart Fire Department, the Sacred Heart Sportsman’s Club, served on the City Council, was a member of the Sacred Heart V.F.W., and in the 1950’s he played with and managed the Sacred Heart Saints baseball team. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, spending time with his family and friends, gardening, building, reading, doing puzzles, and playing cards. He is survived by his daughter and son: Lorie (Don) Laurila of Sioux Falls, SD, and Mike (Traci) Hoberg of Mason City, IL; his grandchildren: Kevin Laurila, Jenny (Brian) Grefe, Jessica (Dave) Kluck, Tim (Elli) Laurila, Jacob (Liz) Hoberg, and Kelli (Kevin) May; his great grandchildren: Jack, Tanner, Aiden, Ava, Soren, Sam, and Henry; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Doris in 1988, and 1 sister and 3 brothers.
