Debra Ayleen Dreier, age 75, passed away on Saturday, Apr 21, 2018 at her residence in Redondo Beach, California. Debra Ayleen Dreier was born December 27, 1942, in Hubbard, Iowa to Oren and Jimmiete Dreier. Growing up on the family farm, she learned the disciplines of hard work, generosity and integrity. She was a revered coach to many student athletes at Markham Jr. High, Jordan High School and Venice High School where she coached basketball, softball and track. She was a loving, approachable and dedicated mentor who inspired goodness and self confidence in her players. Many of her teams produced athletes that would go on to compete in college and some at the professional level. She retired in 2001. In 1987, Coach Dreier was awarded the distinguished Coach of the Year honors for all Los Angeles City Schools. She was recognized by many of her peers for her development of championship caliber teams at the high school level. Coach Dreier was also respected by many college coaches and recruiters for her player development skills. Her players were highly sought after due to the successful team programs that she helmed. In retirement, Debbie enjoyed traveling and getting involved with her church. In 2005, Debbie joined a team of four on a mission with Lutheran Assoc. of Missionaries and Pilots (LAMP) to Huselia, an Aboriginal village in northern Canada. As the Activity Coordinator, Debbie combined Vacation Bible School with the Aboriginal culture’s emphasis on sharing and spirituality. Soon youngsters tagged along with Debbie and parents invited her to their homes to eat with them. Debbie’s unconditional love and generosity endeared her to her new friends. Debbie was actively involved in the South Bay Community, Immanuel Lutheran Church and First Lutheran Church, Manhattan Beach. Whether chairing committees or creating new programs that advanced their ministry, Debbie was gifted at inspiring enthusiasm and lasting involvement. Of particular interest to Debbie was the Beach Cities Health District Garden Angel Volunteer Program which maintains gardens at assigned schools, assisting students as they grow and harvest their gardens. Debbie was actively involved in California Retired Teachers Association, South Bay Association of American University Women, Sons of Norway, Immanuel Lutheran Church’s Green Thumb Gardeners, First Lutheran Church’s Stewardship Board and a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. Debbie passed away April 21, 2018. She is survived by her sister, Denise Dreier of El Cajon, CA; close friend Annette Hartunian of Redondo Beach, CA; and many family and friends in Iowa, Utah and California. We will all remember and cherish our memories and great times with Debbie.
