Obituary of Virgil “Virg” Riley Virgil “Virg” Riley, age 75, of Beardstown, died Monday, April 30, 2018 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield after a long, hard-fought battle with cancer. He was born February 6, 1943 in Beardstown, the son of Walter and Helen DeWitt Riley. He married Jean Lisenbee on November 8, 1958 in Rushville. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jean of Beardstown; three sons, David (Kathy) Riley of Beardstown, Tim Riley of Lincoln and Virgil Riley, Jr. of East Moline; two daughters, Angela (Manuel) Rivera and Kelly (Fidel Sanchez) Carapia, all of Beardstown; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Virg was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Terry Lee Riley; and one brother, DeWitt Riley. Virg attended school in Beardstown. Most of his life, he worked construction as a union laborer and was also a commercial fisherman. He also worked for Carter’s Tug Service and Beatty Hardware. He enjoyed many pets during his life including dogs, geese, rabbits, and even a pet monkey. Virg was a jack-of-all-trades. He would try anything (riding motorcycles), could fix about anything (fans, mixers, cars and boat motors). Virg also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his kids and grandkids. Throughout his battle with cancer, his daughters Kelly and Angela were by his side as wonderful caregivers, nurses, taxi drivers and anything else that he needed. Virg was known for his generosity. A funeral service will be held 11 AM Friday, May 4, 2018 at Sager Funeral Home in Beardstown with burial at Beardstown City Cemetery.
