Obituary for Ms. Symanthia Mae Van Buren Symanthia Mae Van Buren, 75, of Nashville, Tennessee passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at Rosewood Care Center in Peoria. Symanthia was born on May 26, 1942 in Clarksville, Tennessee to Annie Mae Moore and Dr. William E. Van Buren. She is survived by her cousins, Donald (Diane) Moore, Ralph (Charmian) Moore, Gloria Moore, Kathleen Moore (of Chicago), and Garry (Denise) Moore in Peoria, Barbara Knox and Angel Rankin of Detroit, Michigan, Shelia (Lloyd) Green and Bradford of Nashville, Tennessee, her beloved caregiver Angelia (James) Flenoy of Nashville, and a host of distant relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents. Symanthia accepted Christ as her personal saviour at an early age and graduated from Burt High School in Clarksville. She earned a degree in Vocational Home Economics from Tennessee Agricultural and Industrial State University in 1966. While a student in college, Symanthia was active in the Civil Rights movement and was a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated. Known for her graceful and charming personality, Symanthia served many years as a children’s librarian at Glenville Branch Library in Cleveland Ohio and taught an adult class, “The Beauty Clinic” on hair care, hygiene, fitness, and diet. The class was a reflection of her active lifestyle that included travel, swimming, biking, decorating, and church activities. A sudden stroke curbed her activities, but she took her vibrant and engaging personality to Nashville, Tennessee where she lived with her mother until her Ms. Buford’s death in 2013. Symanthia relocated to Peoria, Illinois in 2013 and made many friends, including the staff and residents of Rosewood Care Center. She was known as a southern belle, who often expressed a ton of gratitude for the smallest of favors. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
