Obituary for Clayton E. “Gene” Redfern Dubuque, Iowa Clayton E. “Gene” Redfern, 88, of Dubuque, Iowa, died Wednesday, April 4, 2018, at Oak Park Place in Dubuque. Services will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 7, 2018, at St. Patrick’s Church in Benton with Rev. David Flanagan officiating. Burial will be in Shawnee Cemetery in New Diggings. There will be no visitation. Casey Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Cuba City is in charge of arrangements. Gene was born on August 10, 1929, in New Diggings, Wisconsin, the son of Clayton “Toadie” and Beatrice (Fitzgerald) Redfern. He married Vayda M. Miller on June 28, 1949. She preceded him in death on October 24, 2017. Gene graduated from New Diggings High School and began working at John Deere Dubuque Tractor Works in 1948, retiring as methods layout inspector in 1978. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954. Gene had an avid interest in all sports, especially coon hunting with old Bob, ice fishing, bowling and a good poker hand. Survivors include three sisters-in-law, Dorean Redfern, Council Hill, Il., Jane Redfern, Hazel Green, WI, and Shirley Puls, Cuba City, WI; and many nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Clayton “Toadie” and Beatrice (Fitzgerald) Redfern; two sons, Mitchell and Keven; three brothers, George, Gerald, and Paul; and one sister, Maxine Hillary.
