Obituary for Richard Douglas Pennington Richard Douglas Pennington, 82, of 321 Hanley Circle, Danville, VA, died on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at Bright Leaf Place in Danville after a decline in health for the past few months. Mr. Pennington was born in Pittsylvania County, VA, on April 19, 1935, a son of the late James Andrew Pennington and the late Ella M. Pennington McClanahan. He lived most of his life in the Pittsylvania County and Danville areas. He served as an officer for the Martinsville Police Department before later working for Dan River Mills until his retirement. He proudly served his country in the US Navy during the Korean War before being honorably discharged and going on to serve in the Air National Guard for twenty-six years. He worked to honor his fellow veterans as a member of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of Schoolfield Church of the Brethren where he served as a Deacon and Trustee of the church. In his spare time, he was an avid outdoorsman, who loved gardening, hunting, fishing, and hiking. Another passion of his was his love of bluegrass music. On October 11, 2003, he married Jennie Lee Wagner Pennington, who survives of the residence. Survivors include two daughters, Arlene Pennington Smoot (Calvin David Smoot, Jr.), of Danville, VA, and Donna Pennington Williams, of Roanoke, VA; two sisters, Carole McClanahan and Virginia M. Hughes, both of Danville, VA; and other survivors, Charles W. Smoot, Amanda S. Whitaker, Chase Williams, Kaylee Smoot, Emerson Whitaker, Richard D. Scott, Randolph N. Scott, and Davis Scott. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by three brothers, George T. McClanahan, Edwin F. McClanahan, and James R. Pennington; and a sister, Marion M. Wade. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 2:00 P.M. at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Reverend Richard Berkley officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Burial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service and at other times will be at the residence. The family suggest that in lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Schoolfield Church of the Brethren Building Fund, 37 Glen Oak Dr., Danville, VA, 24541.
