Requiescat in Pace
Of Oakton, Virginia. Entered into Eternal Life on March 18, 2018 two weeks before her 91st birthday. Mary was born in Brooklyn, NY the daughter of the late John P and Rose F (Hutchinson) Dugan. She resided in Brooklyn until her marriage to John J. Dunleavy on September 24, 1949 at Good Shepherd Church, Brooklyn. They met on a blind date in the summer of 1946. Mary was a graduate of St Brendan’s… Read More » High School and earned a BS in Political Science from St Joseph’s College for Women in 1949. She was the first person in her family to attend college. John joined the FBI and they lived in Detroit, Philadelphia and finally, returned to their beloved New York in 1955. They moved from Long Island to Oakton, Virginia in 1987 to be closer to their children and grandchildren. Mary’s husband, John, died in April 2015.
Mary is survived by her four children: John J (Sandra) Dunleavy, Kathleen (Michael Lee) Dunleavy, Dennis Dunleavy and Sheila (Michael) Rodwill, four grandchildren: Mary (Michael) Hannon, MD, Caitlin Dunleavy, Brendan (Francie) Rodwill and Fiona Lee and by two great-grandsons: Martin Gerard and John Joseph Hannon. Mary was pre-deceased by her three sisters, Rose Alice Dugan, Jane Craft and Ann Dineen.
Mary was a special education pioneer starting her 22-year teaching career in 1964. She earned an MS in Special Education from Hofstra University, NY in 1967. Her colleagues considered her a Master Teacher. Her love for her students was an extension of her love for her family.
Mary was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Mary was a devout Catholic, a proud Brooklyn native, a wonderful cook and hostess, a Brooklyn Dodger fan, a crossword puzzle solver, a Latin scholar, a lively conversationalist, a Notre Dame game watch caterer, someone who loved to laugh and so much more. She was the Heart of our family. We will miss her greatly but know that we will see her again in God’s own time.
The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, April 13th from 2-4PM at the Money and King Funeral Home, 171 Maple Avenue W, Vienna, VA. Mass of the Christian Burial will be offered at 1PM on Saturday, April 14th at Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church, 8601 Wolftrap Road, Vienna, VA. Interment at 12 Noon on Monday, April 16th at Quantico National Cemetery, Triangle, VA.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mary’s name to the Little Sisters of the Poor, 4200 Harewood Road, NE, Washington, DC 20017-1554 or to Our Lady of Good Counsel School, 8601 Wolftrap Road, Vienna, VA 22182
