Obituary for Hiram “Hydie” Blake Bennington Hiram A. “Hydie” Blake, 91, a resident of Fillmore Street in Bennington, died Sunday, April 15, at Albany Medical Center surrounded by loved ones. Hydie was born on November 11, 1926 in Walloomsac, NY, son of the late Hiram B. and Margaret (Barber) Blake. He received his education at the North Bennington school. Hydie married the former Frances H. Mears on January 3, 1949 in Bennington. They were married for 64 years prior to Frances’ death on February 25, 2013. In earlier years Hydie was employed at the Holden Leonard Mill, Bennington Brush and Bennington Display. He later worked for over 25 years at Molly Stark school until the time of his retirement. Hydie had a great love for his family. He was an avid woodworker and owned every woodworking tool. He was very proud of the fact the he and Frances had constructed their home on Fillmore Street with their own hands. He designed many projects for the teachers at Molly Stark and made sure that everyone in the family had one of his handmade nativity barns at Christmas time. Hydie enjoyed his morning breakfasts at Jensen’s restaurant. One of his greatest joys was riding around in his pickup “Big Red” with his best friend and great grandson, Justin. Survivors include his two daughters and their husbands, Linda S. and Kevin Bishop of Manchester and Marlene F. and Paul Restino of Bennington; eleven grandchildren, Jennifer, Lana, James, Brian, Elizabeth, Ashely, Adrienne, Carmen, Nicholas, Travis and Christopher; twenty one great-grandchildren; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Clyde and Milo Mears, Lois Weaver and Lyla McCoy and several nieces, nephews and cousins. The funeral will be held at the First Baptist Church in Bennington on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. Burial will take place in the family lot in White Chapel Cemetery. Should friends desire memorial contributions in Hiram A. Blake’s memory may be made to either the American Heart Association or the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
