Charles K. Gardner Charles Kirkwood Gardner, 90, of Cortland, has gone home with the Lord on Monday, April 23, 2018. He was born on June 21, 1927 in West Farmington, Ohio, the son of Earl and Bessie Kirkwood Gardner. Charles worked on a bulk freighter for the U. S. Coast Guard and later earned the rank of a sergeant while serving in the United States Army. He had been employed by the Trumbull County Engineer Highway Department from where he retired. Charles had been instrumental in establishing the Johnston Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the Cortland Masonic Lodge #529. Among his many enjoyable pastimes were horseback riding, fishing and woodworking. It was on February 5, 1946, Charles and Mildred E. Bailey were united in marriage. The couple had recently celebrated their seventy-second wedding anniversary. They were blessed with three daughters whom Charles referred to as his “Charlie’s Angels”. Loving memories of Charles will be carried on by his loving and devoted wife, Mildred; his daughters, Nancy (Dan) Troyer, Laura (Robert) Carter and Janice Parker who was “the darling baby daughter”; his grandchildren, Keith, Donnie, Nicole, Rachael, Natalie, Bruce, Ross, Sonny and Nathan; his 22 great grandchildren and his countless nieces and nephews. Preceding Charles were his parents, Earl and Bessie; all of his brothers and sisters and his grandson, Kevin. Private interment with military honors will be held in the Johnston Township Cemetery in Johnston, Ohio.
