Obituary of Mariakutty Peter 1930-2018 Of Pelham, NY on April 21, 2018. Beloved wife of the late R.G. Peter. Devoted mother of Annie Peter (Mark Edelstein), Anita Peter-Ott (Bill Ott), and Anila Rita Peter-Faherty (Frank Faherty). Adoring Grandmother and Umma of Billy, Brittany and Madison Ott, Peter and Patrick Faherty, and Zachary, Lauren and Brandon Edelstein. Survived by her dear brother Chackochan Arackal. Beloved sibling of 3 brothers and 1 sister that passed before her. Also survived by many, many loving nieces and nephews from the Arackal family. Mariakutty was born in Uzhavoor, Kottayam, Kerala, India. She was the first woman from her village to receive a college education, pioneering a path for many other women to receive an education in nursing. She was chosen by the government of India to open a nursing school where she educated hundreds of nurses. Mariakutty is considered, by countless people as an inspiration and mentor for the women in her village to become nurses. In 1963 she married her soulmate and Ponacocha, R.G. Peter whom she inspired to convert to Catholicism. In 1975 Mariakutty ventured to the United States by herself, in search of a better life and greater opportunity for her daughters. For many years, Mariakutty worked two jobs to support her daughters through college and Medical school. She worked as a CCU nurse and later became a Nursing Director. The church was central to her life, partaking in many charitable activities focused on serving the poor. Her extraordinary faith inspired anyone who came in contact with her. Mariakutty was very devoted to her family and her 8 grandchildren. Umma instilled in her family a devotion to faith, love and charity that will carry on forever.
