Martin “Mike” Kohnen, 97, of Wessington, SD, passed away at home on Wednesday, April 18, 2018. Mike was cremated and a private memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hyke Funeral Home in Redfield, SD (www.hykefuneralhome.com). Martin “Mike” Walter Kohnen was born September 18, 1920 in North Branch, MN to Bill and Rose (Meyer) Kohnen. He grew up near Caledonia, MN and Tulare, SD. On November 22, 1945, he married Pauline Lawyer in Redfield. Mike lived on the farmstead near Wessington for 66 years. He enjoyed farming, working with his cattle and going to sales well into his 80’s. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Bonilla, SD. Mike is survived by his three sons: Robert (Pam) Kohnen of Hitchcock, SD; Larry (Kathy) Kohnen of Hitchcock; and James Kohnen of Aberdeen, SD; his two daughters: Sharon Schroeder of Wessington; and Debra (Don) Germain of Wessington; 56 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline; his brothers: Elmer Kohnen and Benjamin Kohnen; and his sister, Lena Heintz.
