Richard O. Smith, 80, of Marquette, died peacefully Thursday morning, April 19, 2018 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans. He was born June 14, 1937 in Ironwood, Michigan, a son of the late Walter and Eleanor (Dahl) Smith. He was a 1955 graduate of Ironwood High School, earned a Bachelor’s degree at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a Master’s degree at the University of Michigan. Richard served in the US Army. He was employed as a social worker in Lacrosse, Wisconsin… Read More » before taking a position in 1976 with the Delta-Schoolcraft Intermediate School District as a school social worker until his retirement in 1997. He was an avid sailor who had docked at the Fish Dock in the Lower Harbor for many years. His interests included hiking, reading, camping, and skiing. Richard is survived by four children: Jeff Smith of Oregon, Sherri (Bill) Herzfeld of Buffalo, MN, Amy Smith Borash of Marquette, and Jeremy Smith of Jefferson, WI; grandchildren Madison, Leif, Kimm, Katie, and Nick; brothers Wayne (Lynette) Smith of Iron River, WI and Rod (Jean) Smith of Ironwood, MI; former wife Sally Smith of Marquette; former wife Judith Smith of Minneapolis, MN; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Wendy. A celebration of Richard’s life will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association-Greater Michigan Chapter, Upper Peninsula Office, 309 S. Front St., #233, Marquette, MI 49855.
