Obituary for Joseph J. Bettencourt
Joseph J. Bettencourt, 84, of Fairhaven, passed away peacefully Saturday, March 31, 2018, surrounded by his family at Alden Court, in Fairhaven. He was the husband of Helen B.(Ryan) Bettencourt.
Born and raised in Acushnet, son of the late Antone J. and Josephine (Marshall) Bettencourt, he settled in Fairhaven, in 1957. Joe had worked as a production engineer for over 30 years at Alberox Corporation.
A former Fairhaven Call Firefighter, Joe was the Captain of Engine #4. He was a past President of the Livesey Club, participated in the 4th Old Dartmouth Militia – Fort Phoenix Garrison, he was a Docent at the New Bedford Whaling Museum, and in the 1950’s and 60’s he played drums in the band, “The Wanderer’s”.
He is survived by his loving wife, Helen; four sons, Joseph J. Bettencourt and his wife Pamela of Fairhaven, Richard A. Bettencourt and his wife Judith of New Hampton, NH, James F. Bettencourt of Fairhaven, and Steven M. Bettencourt and his wife Dawn of Milford, CT; two daughters, Susan M. Soares and her husband Lawrence, and Kristen A. Sniezek and her husband Frank all of Fairhaven; 14 grandchildren; five great granddaughters; a brother, Robert Bettencourt of FL and many nieces and nephews. Joe was the brother of the late Antone, Jr., John, George, and Jerald Bettencourt, Rose Curran, Mildred Pierce and Margaret DeTerra.
The family wishes to thank staff of Alden Court and Beacon Hospice for their compassionate care.
In accordance with his wishes he was cremated, memorial calling hours will be held on Monday, April 9th, 2018, 4-7 pm, in the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main St., Fairhaven.
Burial will be private.
