Obituary for John S. Daily
Local businessman, John S. Daily, of Martinsville died on Friday, March 30, 2018 at St. Francis Hospital in Mooresville at the age of 91. He was one of three children born to the late Howard and Doris (Shireman) Daily. John was born on Saturday, August 14, 1926 in Martinsville, Indiana.
A lifelong resident of Martinsville, John attended Martinsville schools and graduated high school at the age of seventeen with the class of 1944. He enlisted with the US Army Air Force immediately following graduation and was inducted on August 10, 1944, just four days shy of his eighteenth birthday. He served his country with bravery during WWII and was honorably discharged as a Corporal on August 23, 1946.
John began his lifelong career in car sales during the 1950’s as co-owner of City Motors Ford-Lincoln-Mercury in Martinsville. In the 1970’s, he ventured out on his own and opened John Daily Chevrolet-Buick. After several years of sole proprietorship, John joined forces with his cousin, JK Daily, and the two partnered in Daily Motors in Martinsville. The dealership served the Martinsville residents throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s and John retired in 1996 after nearly fifty years of auto sales.
In addition to wheeling and dealing in car sales, John loved to winter in Texas, visit Hot Springs, Arkansas, and collect a variety of clocks. He also had a love for dogs and was notorious for bringing home puppies unexpectedly. He held memberships in the Martinsville Elks Lodge #1349, Martinsville V.F.W. #1257, Martinsville American Legion Post #230, serving as past commander, the 40 & 8, Masonic Lodge #74, Morgan County Shrine, Scottish Rite, Martinsville Moose Lodge #1127, Mooresville Eagles and The Columbia Club in Indianapolis. He was also a longtime member of the Martinsville First United Methodist Church.
John is survived by a host of family and friends including his wife of fifty-six years, Wilma Jo (Wright) Daily of Martinsville; son, David (wife, Amy) Daily of Indianapolis; daughter, Michele (husband, John) Bryant of Newburgh, IN and four grandchildren, Nicholas and Matthew Daily and Samuel and Adrienne Bryant.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, James Daily and a twin sister, Betty Lawler.
Family and friends are invited to visit on Friday, April 6th from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm at Neal & Summers Funeral and Cremation Center in Martinsville. In honoring John’s wishes, he will be cremated following the ceremony.
Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the American Legion Post #230 and/or the Morgan County Humane Society.
