Obituary of Brenda Adkins
Brenda Joyce Adkins, 70, of Salisbury, passed away on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at South Bay Hospital in Sun City Center, FL. Born on Tangier Island, VA, she was the daughter of the late Evelyn Walter and wife of the late John “Jack” Thomas Adkins.
She was a graduate of Wicomico High School and also graduated from Wor-Wic and Wilmington University with a degree in nursing. Brenda worked as a Registered Nurse for
Deers Head Hospital and retired as the Director of Nursing for the Holly Center. She worked for the State of Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and was active in the Maryland Nurses Association and American Nurses Association. She served on the legislative committee for the State of Maryland where she earned the Rosalie Abrams Legislative Award and was also awarded the Maryland Nurse of the Year.
Brenda is survived by two step-daughters, Deborah “Debbie” (Lee) Smith of Salisbury and Sandra “Sandy” Kylliainen; four granddaughters, Kristin Smith, Erin Wendall, Tanja Kylliainen, and Kata Kylliainen; a great-granddaughter, Lucy Wendall; and a great-grandson, Barett Wendell.
In addition to her mother and husband, she was also preceded in death by an aunt, Thelma Walter Parks.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to the Holly Center Foundation, Bay Shore Services, or the MAC Center.
