William “Pops” J. Burkett, 84, of Bluford, Illinois, passed away at 7:00 pm December 13, 2022 at Deaconess Midtown Hospital in Evansville, Indiana. He was born December 16, 1937 in Fairfield, Illinois to the late James Paul and Lola Marie (Gillison) Burkett. William married Juanita Faye (Ball) Burkett on April 16, 1962. They were blessed with fifty-one years of marriage before she preceded him in death on July 23, 2013. William is survived by his children, William Burkett and wife, Janie of Newport, North Carolina, Edward Burkett of Bluford, Illinois, James Burkett of Belmont, Illinois, Juanita Bigley and husband, Wayne of Bluford, Illinois; grandchildren, William Burkett and wife, Destiny, Casey Opia, Catherine Elliott and husband, Matt, Richard Burkett, Cheryl Tolliver, James Thetford and wife, Sylvia, Shana Long and husband, Bryan; fifteen great-grandchildren; and several brothers and sisters. In addition to his parents and wife, William was preceded in death by his son, Lawrence Burkett and grandson, Edward J. Burkett. Mr. Burkett proudly served his country in the United States Army. He worked many years at Mount Vernon Neon Sign Company. He loved fishing and will be greatly missed. A Visitation will be held Sunday, December 18, 2022 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois.
