Thomas “Shoe Fly” Bell Fickes, 87, died on Monday, December 26, 2022 at Pleasant Acres Nursing and Rehab. He was the husband of Fern June (Ilgenfritz) Fickes, sharing 67 years of marriage. Thomas was born in York on December 28, 1934, son of the late Charles E. and Marguerite I. (Bell) Fickes. He graduated from William Penn Senior High School, Class of 1952. He attended Living Word Community Church. Thomas was a printer, working at Maple Press from 1952-1968, Lancaster Press from 1968-1979, and York Graphic from 1979 to February 2000. He enjoyed a variety of sports; he played softball and football. Thomas served as the coach and manager of a little league baseball team. He also enjoyed going hiking and doing puzzles. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Sheree L. Coates of Mount Wolf; two sons, Jack C. Fickes and his wife, Jo of Florida and James T. Fickes and his wife, Deb of Red Lion; five grandchildren, Jesse Coates and his wife, Megan, Jennie Showers and her husband, Danny, LeAnn Fickes, Grant Fickes and his wife, Abby, and Vanessa Fickes; and four great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 30, 2022 at the Etzweiler Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, 1111 E. Market St., York. There will be a visitation on Friday from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow the service in Mount Rose Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Living Word Community Church, 2530 Cape Horn Road, Red Lion, PA 17356.
