Thomas’ Obituary Thomas George “Tom” Hegger, of Woburn, formerly of Watertown and Cambridge, MA, passed away on February 27, 2022. Born on Saturday morning, November 26, 1955 at the Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge. Tom was educated in the Watertown public school system and graduated from Watertown High School in 1973. It was at his first job, working in the main office at Watertown High School, that Tom learned the importance of customer service. Tom’s work ethic, attention to detail, and equal treatment of all of the faculty, staff and students had such an impact on the school that his classmates, in the Class of 1973’s Last Will and Testament, bequeathed to the high school’s secretarial staff “Another Tom Hegger”. This proved unnecessary when Tom was offered a full time position, which he accepted, and remained at Watertown High School for several more years. Tom expanded the scope of his customer service beyond Watertown when, in the late 1970’s, he accepted a job offer at the Hyatt Regency in Cambridge. Working in the reservations department, he supported the travel plans of a worldwide customer base. As a guest’s initial point of contact, Tom’s cheerful personality and desire to exceed expectations were the perfect combination to create a positive experience and building guest loyalty. Tom then began his more than thirty-four year career with the United States Postal Service at the South Boston facility. Wanting to serve the public directly, Tom sought and obtained a position as a Postal Clerk in the Watertown Square Post Office. After several years, as a reward for the quality of his work and his commitment to customer service, Tom was promoted to Senior Postal Clerk position, running a branch Post Office in Arlington. Tom’s innate friendliness and his treatment of every customer with the respect and dignity he knew they deserved often brought his local customers to the post office even when their only business was to stop in and chat with Tom and the rest of the post office staff. Aside from his job, Tom’s primary interests were being the family meteorologist (“How much snow did you get?”, “It is hot there today?”), watching television game shows, watching parades (on television and in person), watching political talk shows, listening to music, and traveling. His favorite destinations were Hawaii, Florida, New York City, and Connecticut. Tom visited his sister, Tena Marie, in Hawaii a number of times, each time traveling with a different friend or family member. Tom’s warmth and personality allowed him to seamlessly fit in with the locals, relaxing in the sunshine, hanging loose, and embodying the spirit of Aloha! Tena Marie’s Ohana (family) in Hawaii always spoke fondly of Tom and would often ask about when his next visit would be. Tom would also make semi-annual trips to Florida to allow his aunt Peg to travel between Florida and Massachusetts with her dogs. There was nothing he wouldn’t do for those he loved. Tom’s love of family was a life-long trait. When he wasn’t spending time with his immediate family, he was visiting all of his aunts and uncles and so many of his cousins. Even recently, when he couldn’t see them face to face, Tom would spend hours every day on the telephone, keeping in contact with his cousins. Most recently, Tom’s loving devotion to his father was shown by the constant care and attention he provided; transporting his father to medical appointments, keeping track of his medication, preparing his meals, and just spending time with him. The living embodiment of the word avuncular, he was Uncle Tom not only to his nephews, Raymond, Devon and Jameson, but also to several of his younger cousins and the children of some of his friends. Indulgent to a fault, Uncle Tom was always ready to provide transportation to the local playground, to take a trip to the movies or an amusement park, or simply to go for a ride to avoid boredom all of the grown ups. Tom loved to drive his car; and he would gladly use his own car to teach any younger family member how to drive. Of course, he would then tease them relentlessly after any close calls of a collision (or an actual collision) during the lesson. Even though he was a creature of habit, Tom was always ready to try new things. Any suggestion to eat at a new restaurant, to meet new people, to do something different, or to take a spur of the moment trip were almost always met with Tom’s “okay”. Most of all, Tom loved to laugh. Often turning red with his infectious giggle, he could find humor in any and all situations. Tom is survived by his father, Louis Hegger. He was the loving son of the late Tena (Sperison) Hegger. He was the beloved brother of Roseanne Hegger, Tena Marie H. Wallace and her husband Clayton, Betty Lou Canty and her husband William, Laureen M. Hegger, and Louis J. Hegger. He was the cherished uncle of Raymond W. Harris IV, Devon L. Harris and Jameson M. Hegger. Donations in his memory may be made to Catholic Appeal Read More
